CAST HACKS - I BROKE MY WRIST

Hello all,

I knoooow it's been ages since I posted, but summer and holidays called! This post is well overdue as its been a couple of months since I actually broke my left wrist. I had a minor hairline fracture but enough to be broke. I thought this post would help because I found that reading things like this really helped me to feel more comfortable with it! Because believe me it's a right pain in the chuff.

For starters how I broke my wrist. I was playing rounders at school in a PE lesson and I hit the ball (for once) and no joke it was an awesome hit! So, as you do I was running and just as I left 3rd bass someone was running through, in my way. So I slowed down as to not crash, but slipped on the early morning grass and fell.
My hand went fully numb and my head was spinning and I almost fainted like 5 times. Now I find it really funny to think about but at the time I was like omg what is happening to me!
I went the rest of the day with a swollen broken wrist, just assuming it was sprained. I even managed to go to see 5SOS with it the same evening without even knowing!

The next day was Saturday and my hand had doubled in size! so we went to the hospital and found out it was broken, got a temporary cast and went back the next Monday for the real pot.

This is what my hand looked like the day i got my temporary cast off, to get my proper one on! It always reminds me of small babies who have really chunky lil hands. AND IT WAS GREEN! my knuckles went black and my thumb and fingers went a deep purple as it was bruising so badly!

I always got asked so many times "is that the actual cast" and yes it is! The reason I didn't get a colour is because this is a different kind of cast. As my wrist was sooooo swollen the nurse had to use this kind of plaster that was mouldable, and also because it needed to be at the bent angle you can see in the picture, to ensure that the bone grew back in the right way. I had my cast on for 4 weeks.

During the first week the pain was ridiculous. I had to hold my arm upright on a pillow all the time so it didn't hurt, at school I had it in a sling and at night I had to rest it on a pillow or I couldn't sleep. But don't worry, you get used to it after a while.

Moving on to the rubber oven glove. (it's not actually)
This beauty allowed me to shower properly without help (because before I had to sit in the bath with a swimming costume on, plastic bag on the cast and get my mum to wash my hair...awks) This baby also allowed me to go swimming! I would have it on and rest my kick board and swim! (harder than it sounds I promise)

For me, one of the worst things was the smell. As there was no way to clean my hand or inside of my cast, it ended up stinking! I can't even describe it! It was like vinegar that had gone off.....awful..... just awful. I still get nightmares!

To try and keep me sane, I would use hand gel to wash my hand. (as you can't get it wet and its only 75p from ASDA) I would use it so often I became obsessed with making it clean. I think that was mainly because of how embarrassed I was about the smell...but I couldn't stop smelling it? Genuinely think I had issues!
I also used these Andrex wipes to clean the actual cast. As it was white pot it would get dirty really fast, and people would always try and draw on it! So I wanted to keep it looking and feeling fresh. (another attempt to be rid of the awful smell)

Another thing so many people asked was about signing it! My answer was always no. Luckily I could get away with the excuse that I had mock exams and might get told off (a good excuse on my behalf) so no one signed it or drew on it or anything!
Personally I don't understand why people would want other peoples names on their cast? like I don't even know you that well why would I want your name on my arm???? But that's just my opinion!

Finally, 4 weeks later I got my cast off! My hand was so tiny and cute! It was so weird from it being so fat and green to it being so pale again and thin. (but I still managed to have amazingly painted nails, done by yours truly) I felt so airy and my wrist was so free to move....its a very weird sensation that's quite hard to describe!
I'm very pale anyway, but my hand was even paler! and my hairs were basically black, they still are quite dark now!

I also got a splint, which supported my hand for a week or so at school so it was easier to use and move, but I could take this off so I could swim a little more freely.

So, in conclusion don't break your wrist. It's a pain and very annoying!
On the other hand, don't let it upset you or get in your way, sure its annoying but you get over it eventually!
Overall the most annoying thing about it was not being able to do PE! I had to sit out and it was soooooo annoying! But it was nice being sympathised by people!

Thankyou for reading I hope you enjoyed and this helps maybe if you ever break a bone and need so ideas on how to support it or some inspiration and hate the world for breaking your bones!

Thanks again!
Fern :)

P.S sorry for not doing a Monthly faves for July and August but I will be doing a summer faves/essentials post instead! So watch out for those!
